Islamic Rites of Passage.
Like every other religion, religious ceremonies mark the significant moments of a persons life. For the Islamic faith, this is no different. There are several different occasions by which Muslims use religious celebrations to mark significant moments in their lives, these are:
- When a baby is born into the family.
- When a couple fall in love and get married.
- And when the life of a love one ends at their death.
Activities
To fully comprehend the importance of celebration and the need for ritual in their lives, students could be encouraged to:
- Think of a birthday that they have celebrated recently.
- They are asked to think about and list the rituals that are always associated with birthdays, for example, birthday cakes, balloons, cards, presents, singing etc.
- Students are then further asked to think of any deeper, important things that are expressed through birthday rituals.
- Now, students are asked to choose one specific ritual and asked what it means for that particular ritual to be done on a birthday.
Useful Videos:

By watching Islamic videos with students, they can see the differences between differing religious cultures, whilst also noting the similarities.
Videos like these can be also used to compare the other Islamic rituals and perhaps compare them to the rituals that are involved in other religions in section C of the junior Certificate syllabus. |
